Pre-shift drill checks should include visible damage, leaks, loose fittings, guards, alarms, shutdown controls, fluid levels, and ground conditions. Operators should also confirm that communication signals are understood before the work starts.

Trucks should carry more than tools and fuel


Construction trucks are mobile work zones. They move crews, haul tools, carry fuel or supplies, support equipment repairs, and often serve as the first source of emergency gear. That makes truck preparedness a major part of job site safety.


Inspect every work truck for both road safety and job site response.

Load securement also deserves regular inspection. Straps wear, chains stretch or corrode, hooks deform, and binders get damaged. A load that shifts on the road or around a job site can injure workers and the public.


Backing is another common risk. Backup alarms, mirrors, cameras, spotters, and clear travel paths all support safer movement. Even with technology, operators need to stop when visibility is poor or the area is not clear.

Blasting plans must follow federal, state, and local regulations, site requirements, manufacturer instructions, and the direction of licensed blasting professionals.

  • Clearly marked exclusion zones

  • Barricades, signs, cones, and flagging

  • Air horns, sirens, or approved warning devices

  • Fire extinguishers in required locations

  • First aid supplies and emergency response equipment

  • Spill control supplies for support vehicles and equipment

  • Weather monitoring tools when lightning or storms may affect the plan

  • Proper storage and transport controls for explosive materials, handled only by authorized personnel

  • Site maps showing access points, muster areas, and emergency routes

  • Personnel accountability system so supervisors know who is inside or outside controlled areas


Communication is one of the most important pieces of blasting preparedness. Everyone on site needs to understand warning signals, all-clear signals, exclusion zones, and who has authority to stop the work.


Access control must be physical, visible, and enforced. Signs alone are not enough if haul roads, footpaths, or nearby work areas allow people to enter the blast area by mistake. Spotters, barricades, and controlled entry points help prevent that.


Blasting operations also need a reliable emergency plan. That plan should cover medical response, fire response, severe weather, misfire response by qualified personnel, evacuation routes, and how to contact emergency services. Review the plan before work begins, not after something goes wrong.


Crews working near blasting should know where to stand, when to clear out, when to return, and who gives the all-clear. No one should rely on assumptions.


Make September the month you inspect, restock, and retrain


National Safety Preparedness Month is useful because it puts a date on work that often gets pushed aside. Crews are busy. Equipment gets used. Supplies disappear. Trucks change hands. Fire extinguishers get moved and not returned.


A September safety reset can be simple and effective if it focuses on the equipment people use every day.


Start with a walk-through of trucks, drill rigs, toolboxes, storage containers, and blasting support areas. Look for missing supplies, expired items, damaged PPE, unreadable labels, blocked emergency gear, and equipment that no one has inspected recently.


Then restock and assign responsibility. A checklist only works if someone owns it.

  • Review PPE condition and correct use

  • Check spill kits for absorbents, gloves, bags, and labels

  • Confirm blasting communication plans and exclusion zone equipment

  • Update emergency contacts and site directions

  • Practice a short emergency drill based on a real job site scenario


Training should match the equipment. If workers don't know where gear is stored or when to use it, the gear won't solve the problem. A short drill can reveal gaps faster than a long meeting.


For example, ask a crew to respond to a mock hydraulic leak near a drill rig. Can they find the spill kit? Do they know who to notify? Can they stop traffic through the area? Is the used absorbent handled correctly under company policy?


Or run a communication check for a blasting support area. Can everyone hear the warning signal? Does the crew know the safety zone point? Are access roads controlled?
